Youth at Risk of Disengaging from School or Training

JYSS is a specialised youth agency  that has been assisting disadvantaged and at-risk young people for over 20 years. JYSS assists young people in the areas of education, employment, accommodation, emergency relief and community engagement.   We pride ourselves in our ability to provide young people with the wide range of services they require to achieve their goals.   JYSS staff are experienced and knowledgeable and truly care about the issues young people in our community face.

Joondalup Youth Support Services (JYSS) has been successful in gaining DEEWR funding to deliver Youth Connections and are working in partnership with BJL Connecting Communities to deliver Youth Connections Services in the West Coast District.

  • What is Youth Connections?

    Youth connections will provide a safety net for young people who have disengaged from education, or are at risk disengaging, through the provision of tailored case management, mentoring, and alternative education. Our aim is support young people to re-connect with education or training and build resilience, skills and attributes that promote positive life choices and wellbeing.

    Youth Connections is a program for young people aged 13-19 years who are at risk of not making a successful transition through and from school to further education, training or work. Youth Workers will meet with young people either at our office, school or at a place that is convenient to them in order to support and assist them to achieve their goals.

    ... aims to assist young people to;

     Address barriers that prevent them from achieving their goals

    Identify barriers to their educational attainment and successful transition

    Link in with and actively engage in community activities to help young people to achieve their goals. 

  • What is Youth Connections?

    Youth Connections is a youth program that has the ability to travel to young people who are in need of assistance. Youth people can expect;

    • To feel valued and respected
    • To have their own opinions heard in a non-judgmental environment
    • To be able to identify their own goals and areas to be addressed with the Youth Worker
    • To have access to mentoring support
    • To gain life skills, job search skills and work experience options
    • To address barriers preventing them from accomplishing their goals
    • To be assisted to strengthen their links to the community and with their family where appropriate
    • To be assisted by qualified, motivated and supportive staff
    • To have a Youth Worker advocate on their behalf with agencies such as Centrelink, Schools, TAFE and Job Services Australia
    • To have a Youth Worker meet with them at a convenient place within the community
    • To gain a formal education, including Cert II in General Education at JYSS COMET Program.
  • What is your Eligibility Requirement?

    Young people must still be at school and wish to remain at school.This service offers one to one engagement support and workshops in motivation, self-determination, resilience, reframing learning, maintaining positive relationships, renegotiating and re-establishing.

Referrals for type 1 services can be made by phoning BJL Monday to Friday 8.30am to 4.30pm on (08) 9300 3322.

Referrals for type 2 and 3 services can be made by phoning JYSS Monday to Friday 9.00am to 4.30pm on (08) 9300 2677.

Ineligible

If completed Year 12 or equivalent
If in full-time employment at time of assessment
Undertaking tertiary studies

Aim

The aim of Youth Connections is to assist young people to address the educational, social and personal barriers prevetnting them from participating in mainstream community activities such as educaiton, employment and/or training.

Transitional Support

Once a young person is placed into employment, education or training Youth Connections staff will offer transitional support until the young person identifies that they no-longer need assistance.

Youth Connections is funded by the Commonwealth of Australia as represented by the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations
