Equitable Development

Equitable development connects the movements of inclusion, participation on a local and metropolitan level with regional planning and development. It is grounded in four guiding principles:

  • the integration of people and their places,
  • reduction of local and regional disparities,
  • promotion of the triple bottom line,
  • the inclusion of meaningful community voice, participation and leadership.

Equitable development gives a voice to all people and access to information are integral to development. Informed and meaningful participation in development is a matter of right rather than privilege.

The significance of this is that it mobilises human rights beyond the discussions of its fundamental freedoms (hunger, disease and illiteracy) to the community’s capacity and its social arrangements and ability to grow human freedoms. BJL does this primarily through its strong and effective local community partnerships.
